Eizanji Temple is a Shingon sect temple in Gojo City, Nara Prefecture, famous for its octagonal pagoda and bell, both designated as Important Cultural Properties. The octagonal pagoda is a precious structure that embodies the architectural style of the early Heian period. Made of wood with a cypress bark roof and gently curving eaves, it showcases the advanced building techniques of the time. Inside, a Yakushi Nyorai statue is enshrined in the center, surrounded by twelve guardian deity statues. These statues, all from the Kamakura period, are exquisitely carved. The walls of the octagonal pagoda are also adorned with vividly colored murals painted by Kamakura period artists. These murals depict aspects of the Buddhist faith of the time and are valuable cultural assets. The temple bell was cast in the early Heian period and, along with the bells of Jingo-ji Temple in Kyoto and Byodo-in Temple in Uji, is known as one of the "Three Great Bells of the Heian Period."
