The founding of Iwa Jinja Shrine began in 564 AD, when the local chieftain Iwakonogo received a divine oracle from Ōnamuchi-no-kami instructing him to enshrine the deity. Konogo saw a miraculous overnight growth of trees in the western field, with two large white cranes sleeping facing north on a stone (Tsuruishi). Inspired by this, he constructed the shrine facing north within the grove, and the Tsuruishi is still enshrined behind the main shrine today.
