Overview

Daizen Shrine is a historic shrine on Sado Island, known for its connection to the Shimazu clan. It enshrines Hino Sukemasa, an ancestor of the Shimazu clan, and Daizenbo, a retainer of the Shimazu. You can feel the weight of Shimazu history here. Hino Sukemasa was a warrior active from the late Kamakura period to the Nanboku-cho period, and an ancestor of the Shimazu clan. Daizenbo was a retainer who served Hino Sukemasa. It's said that the Shimazu clan established Daizen Shrine to enshrine Hino Sukemasa and Daizenbo. From the shrine, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Sea of Japan. When visiting Sado Island, please be sure to stop by Daizen Shrine. Near Daizen Shrine, you'll find other sightseeing spots such as Nitsugame and Onogame. Nitsugame is a peculiar rock formation on Sado Island, named for its resemblance to two turtles piled on top of each other. Onogame is a cliff on Sado Island, offering a spectacular view of the wild waves of the Sea of Japan.
