A shrine nestled on a hilltop offering breathtaking views of Lake Kamo. Its Meiji-era Noh stage and *kaki-oki goshuin* (pre-written temple seals) are also highlights.
Shiizaki Suwa Shrine is located on a hill overlooking Lake Kamo, boasting one of the most beautiful landscapes on Sado Island. Established in 1376, it's a branch shrine of Suwa Taisha Shrine in Shinano Province and is said to have been the guardian deity of the Kuchimotoman family, the local feudal lords. The shrine grounds are lush and peaceful. The Noh stage, built in the Meiji era with a tiled gable roof, is a precious place to experience Sado Island's traditional performing arts. A breathtaking *taimatsu-noh* (pine-torch Noh performance) is held on Saturday evenings in early May to October (excluding August). You can also try Noh or *shimai* (a shorter Noh performance) if you're interested. While the shrine is unmanned, it has a magnificent main hall where you can receive a *kaki-oki goshuin* (pre-written temple seal). If you're a goshuin collector, be sure to stop by and add this seal, capturing the beauty and history of Sado Island, to your collection. A viewing platform in Shiizaki Park, next to the shrine grounds, offers a panoramic view of Lake Kamo. From here, you can see not only the majestic lake but also the mountains of Sado Island and the vast blue sky. At sunset, the contrast between the crimson sky and the lake surface is stunning and creates an unforgettable memory. Shiizaki Suwa Shrine is a highly recommended sightseeing spot where you can experience the nature and history of Sado Island. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere while gazing at the beautiful scenery of Lake Kamo, immerse yourself in the historical ambiance of the shrine, and refresh your mind and body. Be sure to visit when you're on Sado Island.
