A breathtaking active volcano with billowing smoke, accessible by the Hakone Ropeway!
Owakudani is a volcanic crater formed approximately 3,000 years ago by the eruption of Mount Hakone, and it continues to show vigorous volcanic activity. Hot springs gush forth in the area, forming an onsen (hot spring) town. The name Owakudani literally translates to "Great Boiling Valley," reflecting its origins. The scenery, with its rising steam, truly embodies the dramatic image of a "hell valley." Beyond the unique landscape created by volcanic activity, Owakudani offers unique souvenirs, such as kuro-tamago (black eggs) and volcanic ash crafts. Kuro-tamago are eggs boiled in the hot springs and are said to add seven years to your lifespan if you eat one! Owakudani is easily accessible by the Hakone Ropeway, which offers stunning views of Mount Fuji and the Hakone mountain range. When visiting Owakudani, be mindful of volcanic gases and stay on the designated walkways. Adjust your clothing and belongings to the weather conditions. In winter, be especially careful of snow and ice.
