Kumoba Pond is a serene and beautiful pond located in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, surrounded by abundant nature. It was once known as "Swan Lake" by foreign summer visitors. A well-maintained walking path encircles the pond, perfect for a leisurely stroll. The scenery is particularly stunning during the fresh green of spring and the vibrant autumn foliage, creating a magical atmosphere. It's a popular spot for photography, attracting many tourists. The pond is also surrounded by vacation homes, museums, churches, and other attractions, making it a must-see destination during a Karuizawa trip. It's ideal for those seeking tranquility and a connection with nature.
Kumoba Pond was created in the Taisho era by Genjiro Nozawa of the Nozawa trading company, by damming a stream (Kumoba River) originating from the spring water "Gozen-mizu" located on the current site of the Hotel Kashima-no-mori. Gozen-mizu, the source of the water, has been known as a famous spring since the Edo period, used for the meals of daimyo (feudal lords) and imperial family members during the Karuizawa-juku (post town) era, and even served during Emperor Meiji's imperial visit.
The area surrounding the pond was also a high-class villa district, home to large villas belonging to former nobility, politicians, and Zaibatsu (financial cliques). This area remains a prestigious villa district to this day.
Kumoba Pond is a captivating spot where you can experience the nature and history of Karuizawa. Be sure to visit!
