Overview

Komyo-ji Temple is a Jodo sect head temple situated on a hilltop overlooking the Kamakura sea. Ranked among the five great temples of Kamakura (Kamakura Gozan), it was founded by the Kamakura shogunate regent, Hojo Tsunetoki. This historic temple, established during the Kamakura period, is deeply intertwined with Kamakura's history. Initially founded as Renge-ji Temple by the Hojo clan, it was later renamed Komyo-ji. Despite several fires throughout its history, it retains its beauty to this day. The main hall, designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan, is one of the largest temple structures in the Kamakura region, captivating visitors with its grandeur. Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Kamakura sea, its location provides breathtaking views. The temple grounds also boast a beautiful garden teeming with seasonal flowers, creating a peaceful atmosphere. This tranquil space offers respite from the hustle and bustle of city life.
