A Spanish-style mansion nestled in Yokohama's Yamate district. Its beautiful cream-colored walls and orange tiled roof offer a glimpse into the lives of the wealthy during that era.
Berrick Hall is a Spanish-style mansion located in Yokohama's Yamate district. Built in 1930 as the home of British trader Bertram Robert Berrick, it was designed by American architect J.H. Morgan and is considered one of his representative residential works, alongside the Yamate 111 Bank. Its Spanish architectural style is evident in its cream-colored walls, orange tiled roof, and arched entrance porch. The interior features furniture and furnishings recreating the Berrick family's lifestyle, providing a glimpse into their daily life. The first floor comprised a drawing-room, dining room, living room, and a connected palm room, while the second floor was primarily used as bedrooms. Fireplaces are found in the dining room and living room, and a lion-head wall fountain graces the palm room, designed to overlook Yokohama Port. Berrick's son was 20 at the time of the building's completion; uniquely among the mansions in the Yamate district, his room was designed specifically for a child and is recreated as a young boy's room. Its walls are turquoise blue, reproduced using the fresco technique. The master bedroom displays materials related to the building's history as a boarding house. Berrick Hall also boasts a captivating location offering panoramic views of Yokohama Port. Its lush garden is beautifully maintained, displaying seasonal blooms throughout the year. A beloved landmark in the Yamate district, Berrick Hall is also a popular wedding venue, making it a memorable location for special occasions. When visiting Berrick Hall, we recommend also seeing the nearby Yamate 111 Bank and the Errisman House. The Yamate district's charming, exotic streets are worth exploring even for a simple stroll.
