Senganen Garden is a former villa built in 1658 by Shimazu Mitsuhisa, the 19th head of the Shimazu clan, the lords of Satsuma. Initially called "Iso Teien" (coastal garden), it was later renamed "Senganen." The garden is a grand landscape design, with Sakurajima island serving as a man-made hill and Kinko Bay as a pond. A myriad of flowers bloom throughout the year, creating a space that truly embodies the fusion of nature and human artistry.
Senganen also preserves numerous valuable structures that tell the story of the Shimazu family. For example, the palace where Shimazu Nariakira spent his later years offers a glimpse into the lifestyle and culture of that era. The Shoko Shusei-kan museum showcases a valuable collection of samurai armor, swords, calligraphy, and paintings, providing a deeper understanding of the Shimazu family's history.
Beyond these highlights, Senganen is replete with other attractions. These include the crane-shaped lanterns used for gaslight experiments, the rare cat shrine (Nekogami), and the Suzumon gate, the Edo-era main gate—all historical structures and monuments dotting the grounds.
More than just a garden, Senganen is a quintessential Kagoshima tourist spot where you can experience the history and culture of the Shimazu clan. Why not take a leisurely stroll, enjoying the majestic views of Sakurajima and Kinko Bay, while reflecting on the Shimazu family's rich past?
Registered as part of the World Heritage site "Meiji Industrial Revolution Heritage in Japan," Senganen allows visitors to connect with the story of the people of Satsuma who spearheaded Japan's modernization. Visiting the adjacent Shoko Shusei-kan museum and Satsuma Kiriko glass factory provides a more comprehensive understanding.
Senganen offers a unique blend of history, culture, nature, and cuisine—truly encapsulating the charm of Kagoshima. Come visit and experience its allure for yourself!
