Over 300 tumuli scattered across a vast site! Experience the history and romance of ancient Hyuga Province!
The Saito-baru Kofun Group, located in Saijo City, Miyazaki Prefecture, is one of Japan's largest groups of kofun (ancient burial mounds), primarily featuring keyhole-shaped tumuli. Designated a National Special Historic Site, over 300 kofun are scattered across a sprawling plateau. These tumuli are believed to have been built from the early 4th to the early 7th century as the tombs of the kings and nobles of ancient Hyuga Province. The Saito-baru Kofun Group is significant not only for its scale but also for its valuable insights into the history and culture of ancient Hyuga Province, revealed through the structure of the kofun, their burial facilities, and unearthed artifacts. Among the most notable kofun are the "Otokosawa-zuka Kofun" and the "Onnasawa-zuka Kofun," both managed by the Imperial Household Agency as reference sites for imperial tombs. Otokosawa-zuka Kofun is Japan's largest scallop-shaped kofun, while Onnasawa-zuka Kofun is one of the largest keyhole-shaped tumuli in Kyushu. Legend says these are the resting places of Ninigi-no-Mikoto and his wife, Konohanasakuya-hime, figures from Japanese mythology. A special annual visit is held during the "Kofun Festival" every November. The Saito-baru Kofun Group is more than just a historical site; it's a beautifully landscaped park perfect for strolling and recreation. Spring brings cherry blossoms and rapeseed flowers, summer sees sunflowers, and autumn boasts vibrant cosmos, creating breathtaking seasonal scenery. The site also features the Saihobaru Archaeological Museum and an Ancient Life Experience Center for a deeper dive into the history and culture of ancient Hyuga. The Konohana-kan, the Saihobaru Guidance Center, is a comprehensive information facility with locally produced goods and a restaurant. A visit to the Saito-baru Kofun Group offers a captivating journey through the history and culture of ancient Hyuga Province, allowing you to savor a memorable experience surrounded by magnificent scenery.
