Overview

Hitoyoshi Castle Ruins is a castle built by the Sagara clan during the Kamakura period, which thrived as their residence for approximately 700 years. Its strategic location, utilizing the Kumagawa and Munagawa Rivers as natural moats, is a key feature, and the entire castle ruins are designated as a National Historic Site. Remnants of the honmaru (main enclosure), ninomaru (second enclosure), and sannomaru (third enclosure) remain, allowing visitors to imagine the bustling castle town of the past. The views from the ninomaru and sannomaru offer a panoramic vista of Hitoyoshi city, with the majestic Kumagawa River and lush mountains providing a stunning backdrop. Spring brings a breathtaking display of cherry blossoms, painting the castle ruins in a vibrant pink. This makes it a popular spot for hanami (cherry blossom viewing). Autumn boasts equally impressive foliage, ensuring beautiful scenery throughout the year. Hitoyoshi Castle Ruins is a wonderful tourist spot where history and nature blend harmoniously. Be sure to visit and experience its charm for yourself. Please note that due to the effects of the July 2020 heavy rain, some areas are currently off-limits. Please check the Hitoyoshi City Tourism Association website for the latest information.
