The Mori Ogai Former Residence, located in Kokurakita-ku, Kitakyushu City, is the former home of Mori Ogai, a renowned novelist of the Meiji era. Ogai served as the army surgeon general of the 12th Army Division from June 1899 to March 1902, residing in Kokura for two years and ten months. He spent the first year and a half of that time in this house.
Built around 1897, the house underwent significant alterations to the entrance and passageway after Ogai's departure. However, the city purchased and restored it in 1981. Ogai is said to have written his novel "The Cock" (Tori) in this house, making it a sacred place for literary enthusiasts.
