Kotohiki Park boasts breathtaking views of the majestic Seto Inland Sea and a massive sand drawing of a "Kan'ei Tsuhō" coin.
Kotohiki Park, located in Kanonji City, Kagawa Prefecture, is a nationally designated place of scenic beauty within the Setonaikai National Park. It consists of Kotohikiyama, a mountain approximately 70 meters above sea level, and Ariakehama Beach, a 2-kilometer stretch of white sand. At the summit of Kotohikiyama stands Kotohiki Hachimangu Shrine. From the Zōganabi-iwa Senkei Observatory on the west side, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Ibuki Island in the Suinnada Sea and the magnificent sand drawing of a "Kan'ei Tsuhō" coin. This sand drawing is enormous, measuring 122 meters east-west, 90 meters north-south, and 345 meters in circumference. Legend says it was created overnight in 1633 (Kan'ei 10) to welcome the feudal lord, Ikoma Takatoshi. A scenic drive leads to Kotohikiyama, with a parking area near the observatory. This drive was built to commemorate the cycling events held in Kanonji City during the National Sports Festival in Kagawa Prefecture in 1953. At the foot of Kotohikiyama are Jineien Temple (the 68th temple on the Shikoku Pilgrimage), Kanonji Temple (the 69th temple), and Ichiban'an, said to be the oldest remaining haiku site in Japan, associated with the renga poet, Yamazaki Sōkan. The park also features a pine grove with 50,000 black pines, selected as one of Japan's "Top 100 White Sand and Pine Forests." Among them are uniquely shaped pines with names like "himematsu" (princess pine), "kogasamats" (small umbrella pine), and "susobikimats" (trailing pine). You'll also find fascinating spots showcasing the power of nature, such as "neagari-matsu" (exposed-root pines) and a "suikinkutsu" (water-chime), where water drops falling into an underground jar create a delicate, bell-like sound. In spring, about 200 Somei Yoshino cherry trees blossom, earning the park a place among Japan's "Top 100 Cherry Blossom Viewing Spots." Autumn brings beautiful autumn leaves, making it a place of beauty throughout the year. Kotohiki Park truly embodies a quintessential Japanese landscape, where nature and history blend seamlessly. The vast park features the majestic Seto Inland Sea, white sandy beaches, lush pine forests, and historically significant shrines and temples, offering a tranquil escape simply by strolling through it. Kotohiki Park is a recommended tourist spot for families, couples, and solo travelers alike.
