A breathtaking streetscape with imposing white walls and striking "udatsu"—it's like stepping back in time.
The "Udatsu Streetscape" in Wakimachi, Mima City, Tokushima Prefecture, preserves a traditional townscape dating from the Edo period to the early Showa period. Designated a Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings, it boasts a captivating atmosphere, almost as if time stood still, with its imposing white walls and decorative firewalls called "udatsu". Wakimachi once thrived as a center for Awa indigo production, home to many wealthy merchants. These merchants built "udatsu" on their mansions as symbols of status. These "udatsu" are decorative firewalls that served to prevent fires from spreading between houses. Walking through the "Udatsu Streetscape" envelops you in a historical atmosphere, offering a sense of stepping back in time. Traditional merchant houses and buildings line the streets, creating a space where you can immerse yourself in history and culture. In recent years, numerous events and workshops have been held to preserve the streetscape and promote tourism. Renovated traditional townhouses now house cafes and restaurants, making it a place enjoyed by both tourists and locals.
