Overview

Hodoji Temple is located in Yanagyu, Nara City, Nara Prefecture. Known as the family temple of the Yagyu clan, its tranquil grounds house the Yagyu family graveyard, including the grave of Yagyu Sekishusai. Sekishusai was the grandson of Yagyu Munenori, the founder of the Yagyu school, and a renowned master swordsman. His grave sits quietly at the very back of the temple grounds. Hodoji Temple is also famous for its autumn foliage. The autumn sun paints the grounds in vibrant reds and yellows. The breathtaking display of autumn leaves behind the main hall adds even more depth to the serene atmosphere. Many tourists visit during this season to capture the beauty in photographs. A tea room and a study are also located on the grounds, offering a place for peaceful strolling. The tea room, originally built for the Yagyu clan to enjoy tea ceremonies, still hosts tea ceremonies today. The study, once the residence of the Yagyu family, is now the home of the temple's current priest. Hodoji Temple is a harmonious blend of history and nature, a place of tranquility. It's the perfect spot for those seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of city life.
