Overview

Ono-dera Temple is a Shingon Buddhist temple situated on the mid-slope of Yoshino Mountain. Tradition holds that it was founded during the Kouin period (810-824) by Kukai (Kobo Daishi). Yoshino Mountain has long been revered as a sacred site of Shugendo (mountain asceticism), and Ono-dera Temple played a significant role in its history. Temple records state that Kukai visited Yoshino Mountain during the Kouin period (810-824) and established the temple at this location. Later, during the late Heian period, Minamoto no Yoshitsune is said to have visited the temple on his way to escape to the northern regions of Japan. Ono-dera is also famous for its cherry blossoms. In spring, the mountain is awash in a breathtaking sea of blossoms, attracting numerous visitors. The "Yoshino-yama Sakura," with over 30,000 cherry trees in full bloom across Yoshino Mountain, has captivated people for centuries. Autumn brings a spectacular display of vibrant fall foliage, making it a popular spot for autumn leaf viewing as well. The temple grounds feature a giant cedar tree, estimated to be around 1000 years old, and numerous stone lanterns, creating an atmosphere steeped in history. The cedar tree, with its immense size and ancient presence, commands the reverence of many visitors. The stone lanterns, weathered by time and rain, are beautifully covered in moss, exuding a serene and powerful presence in the tranquil setting. Ono-dera Temple is a harmonious blend of history and nature, representing one of the leading temples of Yoshino Mountain. It welcomes visitors throughout the year, but especially during the cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons. Be sure to visit Ono-dera Temple when you explore Yoshino Mountain.
