Overview

Taima-dera Temple is an ancient temple located in Katsuragi City, Nara Prefecture. Traditionally said to have been founded in the 7th century, it's renowned for its many precious cultural assets, including the East Pagoda and West Pagoda (both National Treasures), and the Mandala Hall. Taima-dera's history stretches back to the 7th century, surviving several fires throughout its history and being repeatedly rebuilt. It has long thrived not only as a place of faith but also as a center of culture. The Taima Mandala, associated with the legend of Princess Chūjō, is one of its most representative treasures. This Buddhist painting, said to have been woven from lotus threads by Princess Chūjō, is carefully preserved as a temple treasure. The Taima Mandala is a magnificent mandala, approximately 3.5 meters high and 5.3 meters wide, with Amitabha Buddha at its center. It's surrounded by various Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and celestial beings, creating a majestic and beautiful work of art. The Taima Mandala is specially exhibited every April, attracting numerous visitors. Taima-dera also captivates with its beautiful scenery throughout the four seasons. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom, and in autumn, the leaves turn vibrant colors, delighting visitors with a breathtaking display of blossoms. Taima-dera is highly recommended for those who wish to spend a relaxing time immersed in history, enjoying a tranquil and serene atmosphere. When visiting Taima-dera, be sure to appreciate the Taima Mandala and soak in the peaceful ambiance, taking time to connect with the temple's rich history.
