Japan's oldest temple with over 1400 years of history. Boasting numerous precious cultural assets, including the Hōrin-ji Triple Pagoda, a National Treasure.
Gangō-ji Temple traces its origins back to Asuka-dera Temple (Hoko-ji Temple), purportedly founded by Soga no Umako during the Asuka period. Asuka-dera Temple was originally located in present-day Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture, but later relocated to Nara City and renamed Gangō-ji. Throughout its long history, Gangō-ji has undergone numerous transformations, suffering destruction by fire and relocation, yet always rising again to its present form. Gangō-ji is a precious temple that preserves the layout of a Horyu-ji style temple complex and houses many significant cultural assets, including the Hōrin-ji Triple Pagoda (a National Treasure) and the Gokurakubō Garan ruins. The Hōrin-ji Triple Pagoda is believed to have existed since the temple's founding, and stands as a valuable testament to Asuka-period architecture. The Gokurakubō Garan ruins represent a section of the temple complex where the Golden Hall and Lecture Hall once stood. Remaining foundation stones and post holes offer a glimpse into the grandeur of the temple's past. Gangō-ji offers a profound experience of history and culture. The temple grounds also feature beautiful gardens, providing a tranquil space for contemplation. Various events and festivals are held throughout the year, offering engaging activities for visitors.
