A tranquil garden carpeted with approximately 120 types of moss.
Saiho-ji Temple, established in the Heian period, is a Rinzai Zen temple known for its serene atmosphere. Its garden, covered in approximately 120 varieties of moss, is breathtakingly beautiful and has earned the temple its popular name, "Koke-dera" (Moss Temple). Designed by Muso Kokushi, the garden blends the styles of a strolling pond garden and a karesansui (dry landscape) garden. A stroll through this verdant paradise offers a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The moss-covered stones and trees, and the quiet air, create a truly otherworldly experience. Saiho-ji Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized as part of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto." The temple complex also includes many historically significant structures, such as the main hall, the scripture hall, and a three-storied pagoda. If you visit Saiho-ji, we recommend allowing ample time to leisurely explore the garden. Immerse yourself in the tranquil setting, contemplate the beauty of the moss, and reflect on the rich history of ancient Kyoto. It will surely be a memorable experience.
