Overview

Yasaka Shrine, located in Gion, Kyoto, boasts a history spanning approximately 1300 years. In the Heian period, it was known as "Gion-sha" and served as a focal point for prayers for the prevention of epidemics and bountiful harvests. Yasaka Shrine is particularly renowned for the Gion Matsuri festival. Held annually from July 1st to 31st, it's one of Japan's three largest festivals. The festival period features various religious ceremonies and spectacular events, including the Yamaboko Junko (float procession). Within the shrine grounds, you'll find various associated and subsidiary shrines. Among the most famous is the Migoshi-sha Shrine, believed to bestow blessings on love and relationships, attracting numerous worshippers. Another notable shrine, the Eki-jinja Shrine, is known for its protective powers against misfortune. While bustling during the day, Yasaka Shrine transforms into a serene and magical place at night. The vermillion gate, especially when illuminated, creates a breathtaking and sacred atmosphere. Yasaka Shrine is a highly recommended sightseeing spot offering a glimpse into Kyoto's history and culture. While especially lively during the Gion Matsuri, it attracts a significant number of visitors year-round. Be sure to visit!
