Ishi清水八幡宮 Shrine, located in Yawata City, Kyoto Prefecture, is the head shrine of approximately 40,000八幡 shrines nationwide. Perched atop Mount Otokoyama, it's nestled in lush greenery and has been a focal point of faith for centuries. Its founding is attributed to 859, when, at the behest of Emperor Kanmu, a branch of the sacred spirits from Kamo Shrine in Kyoto was enshrined here. Ishi清水八幡宮 was formerly called "Iwashimizu八幡宮," a name deriving from "Iwashimizu," the rock spring water gushing from the mountaintop, and "八幡," referring to the deity Hachiman. Throughout its long history, the shrine has garnered the devotion of numerous samurai and nobles, leading to its numerous reconstructions.
