Overview
Taga Taisha Shrine is a shrine located in Taga-cho, Inukami-gun, Shiga Prefecture, enshrining Izanagi-no-mikoto and Izanami-no-mikoto. Established in the 7th century, it has been revered as the Ichinomiya (most important shrine) of Omi Province. The extensive grounds feature many historically significant structures, including the National Treasure "Main Hall" and the Important Cultural Property "Worship Hall." The Main Hall is a stunning example of hiwadabuki (cypress bark shingle) architecture, with exquisite carvings and coloring. The Worship Hall features a large Karahasho (a type of gable roof) at the front and elaborate decorations. The "Otaga Shakushi" (Taga ladle), a symbol of Taga Taisha, is a famous amulet for longevity and good health. Its origins lie in a story where Emperor Genso's illness was cured after a Taga Taisha priest offered rice and a Shide-wood ladle during a prayer. Various festivals are held throughout the year at Taga Taisha, with the "Korei Taisai" festival on April 22nd being particularly vibrant. Taga Taisha Shrine captivates many visitors as a power spot imbued with history, tradition, and faith. Experience the sacred atmosphere and rich history for yourself.
