Witness the breathtaking roar of Shishiiwa, a lion-shaped rock facing the Kumano Nada! Its imposing presence is a true masterpiece of nature.
Shishiiwa, located in Ido-cho, Kumano City, Mie Prefecture, is a component of the World Heritage site "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range," and is also designated as a national natural monument and place of scenic beauty. Its majestic size – approximately 25 meters high and 210 meters in circumference – is truly a work of art created by nature. The rock, shaped like a lion roaring towards the Kumano Nada Sea, has long inspired awe in people. It's traditionally referred to as the 'A' rock (male lion), in contrast to the 'Un' rock (female lion) of the Shinsen-do cave to the south. It's revered as a komainu (lion-dog guardian statue) of the Daima Shrine upstream of the Ido River; hence, the Daima Shrine still lacks komainu statues. Shishiiwa was formed by tectonic uplift and coastal erosion, a process that took place over a long period. The surrounding area boasts many other fascinating spots where history and nature intertwine, including "Onigajo" and "Hanakutsu Shrine," both also World Heritage sites. Every year on August 17th, the Kumano Dai Hanabi Taikai (fireworks festival) transforms Shishiiwa into a prime photography location for numerous photographers. The breathtaking sight of the fireworks illuminating the night sky with Shishiiwa silhouetted against it is truly spectacular. Shishiiwa is a captivating place where history and nature blend. Experience a memorable journey by immersing yourself in the majesty of nature and the history it embodies.
