Overview

Miketsujima Island is an uninhabited island located in Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Its shape resembling a battleship has led to it being called "Gunkanjima" (Battleship Island) for a long time, making it a beloved symbol of the Noto region. The surrounding area is developed as a park, featuring walking paths, a rest house, a beach, a campground, and the Notoji-so (Suzu Onsen) national lodging. Miketsujima Island is located within the Noto Peninsula Quasi-National Park and is designated as a natural monument of Ishikawa Prefecture. Miketsujima Island is formed of mudstone and diatomaceous mudstone from the Late Miocene Epoch of the Neogene Period. The island's summit is covered with a grove of Japanese Holly and Machilus thunbergii. In 2023, detailed laser shooting and analysis by drone revealed its precise shape. Miketsujima Island once had a smaller neighboring island called "Kojima," but it disappeared after a typhoon in 2019. Furthermore, Miketsujima Island itself is experiencing slope collapses due to repeated earthquakes. Miketsujima Island's charm lies not only in its magnificent appearance but also in its history, nature, and legends. It's a truly impressive tourist spot representing the Noto Peninsula, sure to inspire awe in its visitors.
