INFO
Takao Mountain is a popular tourist destination, so it gets crowded, especially on weekends and holidays. We recommend allowing plenty of time for your visit. While the mountain trails are well-maintained, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Bring your own drinks and snacks, or purchase them at mountain huts or shops. The weather can change quickly, so dress in layers to adjust to changing conditions.
Takao-san, a 599-meter mountain in Hachioji, Tokyo, is a popular spot attracting numerous tourists and hikers throughout the year due to its convenient access from the city.
Historically revered as a sacred mountain for Shugendo (mountain asceticism), Takao-san is home to the Yakuoin Temple at its summit. Founded by the monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi), the temple boasts numerous historic buildings including the main hall and Niomon gate.
Takao-san offers diverse hiking trails catering to all levels, from gentle beginner paths to challenging routes for experienced hikers. Cable cars and lifts provide convenient access to the summit for those with limited mobility or stamina. The panoramic 360-degree view from the top is breathtaking, and on a clear day, you can even see Mount Fuji.
Experience the beauty of the changing seasons, with cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant autumn foliage. The autumn leaves paint the mountain in fiery reds and yellows, creating a truly spectacular sight.
At the foot of Takao-san, you'll find a variety of hot springs, restaurants, and souvenir shops, ensuring a full day of enjoyment beyond the hike itself. Takao-san Onsen Gokurakuyu is a popular day spa perfect for relaxing after your climb. Sample local specialties like tororo soba (buckwheat noodles with grated yam) and mountain vegetable dishes.
Takao-san is a captivating destination offering a blend of nature, history, and culture. Come and explore!
