A tranquil and beautiful strolling garden in the heart of Tokyo, preserving the strong atmosphere of the Edo period. Enjoy the flowers and trees throughout the four seasons.
Overview
Koishikawa Korakuen Garden, known as a Tokyo oasis, is an Edo-period daimyo garden built in the early Edo period by Mitsukuni Tokugawa, the first lord of the Mito Domain, within his Edo residence. It was completed under the supervision of the second lord, Yorifusa Tokugawa. Mitsukuni incorporated designs inspired by famous sites in China and Japan, resulting in a unique landscape that fuses traditional Japanese garden elements with Chinese aesthetics.
The garden features a pond-centered stroll garden, along with artificial hills, waterfalls, bridges, and teahouses. The central "Dai-sensui" pond, for example, is modeled after Lake Biwa, with islands like "Hourai Island" and "Chikubu Island" creating the feeling of a lake cruise. The "Engetsu Bridge" is named for its reflection in the water, which resembles a full moon. Historical structures like the "Kara-mon" (Chinese gate) and the "Tokujin-do" teahouse provide further glimpses into Edo-era culture.
Koishikawa Korakuen Garden is also captivating for its ever-changing beauty throughout the year. From cherry blossoms in spring to irises in early summer and autumn foliage in the fall, the garden showcases a different charm each season. The diverse plant life adds to the vibrant natural atmosphere.
If you want to experience tranquility and nature in the heart of Tokyo, Koishikawa Korakuen Garden is a must-visit.
