Enpuku-ji Kannon-do (Iinuma Kannon) is a historic temple located in Choshi City, Chiba Prefecture. Known as the 27th temple on the Bandō Sanjusankannon pilgrimage, it enshrines the Eleven-faced Kannon Bodhisattva, said to have emerged from the sea in the Nara period. It is affectionately known as "Choshi no Kannon-sama" (Choshi's Kannon) by the locals.
The temple grounds boast Chiba Prefecture's only five-story pagoda, its vermillion color a striking contrast against the blue sky. This beautiful pagoda serves as a symbol of Choshi, delighting many visitors. While a relatively new structure, built in 2010, it blends seamlessly with the temple's historical atmosphere, creating a unique landscape.
Enpuku-ji also features many other attractions, including the Choshi Daibutsu (Great Buddha of Choshi), a Niomon gate (two guardian king gate) from the Kamakura period, and an Inari shrine.
Despite being destroyed by fire during the Pacific War, Enpuku-ji has been faithfully restored, preserving the weight of its history. A bronze statue of Amitabha Tathagata in front of the main hall still bears several bullet holes from machine gun fire during the war, a poignant reminder of the battles fought there.
The temple's convenient location, a 5-minute walk from Kannon Station on the Choshi Electric Railway, is another significant advantage. The Choshi Electric Railway is known for its retro train cars, making the journey to the temple a unique experience.
