The Tateyama Naval Air Group Akayama Underground Bunker Site is the remains of an underground bunker (air raid shelter) constructed by the Imperial Japanese Navy during the Pacific War in Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture. Construction reportedly began around 1944 (Showa 19) and continued until the war's end, leaving some parts unfinished. With a total underground length of 1.6 kilometers, it ranks among the largest in Japan, powerfully illustrating the efforts of the people at the time and the severity of the war. Remnants of a power generation facility, a ward, and a telegraph room remain inside, allowing visitors to imagine the lives of the soldiers. Photos, documents, and artifacts that convey the wartime atmosphere are also on display. The Akayama Underground Bunker Site is a valuable historical site where one can learn about the history of war and contemplate the importance of peace. Be sure to visit when you're in Tateyama.
