Ōtaki Castle, located in Ōtaki-machi, Isumi District, Chiba Prefecture, is a historic castle built by Honda Tadakatsu, one of the legendary Four Heavenly Kings who served Tokugawa Ieyasu. In 1590 (Tensho 18), Honda Tadakatsu, granted 100,000 koku of rice by Ieyasu, constructed the castle and developed the surrounding castle town. From 1703 (Genroku 16), the Matsudaira clan ruled the castle for nine generations. After the Meiji Restoration, Ōtaki Castle was abandoned, but in 1975 (Showa 50), a building faithfully replicating the original keep was constructed. The current building serves as the Ōtaki Castle branch of the Chiba Prefectural Central Museum, exhibiting historical materials. The castle houses numerous exhibits related to Honda Tadakatsu and the daily life of the period. The castle's surroundings offer many spots reminiscent of the old castle town. For example, while strolling through the town, you'll find buildings preserving the atmosphere of old merchant houses and traditional townhouses. The castle town also boasts many shops and restaurants that blend traditional crafts and modern life. Ōtaki Castle is a tourist attraction enjoyable for everyone, not just history buffs. Come and experience its history and culture!
