The Kesennuma City Great East Japan Earthquake Remains and Legacy Hall preserves the school building of the former Kesennuma Koyo High School, which was damaged by the tsunami of the Great East Japan Earthquake. The building, left as it was after the tsunami reached the second floor, allows visitors to witness the devastating power of the tsunami firsthand. Through exhibits and videos, you can learn about the situation during the earthquake, the experiences of disaster victims, and the recovery process. Particularly impactful are the preserved remnants of the disaster, such as a broken clock and desks, which remain as they were after the tsunami. These artifacts powerfully remind us of the depth of the disaster's scars and the terrifying power of natural disasters. Guided tours by storytellers offer firsthand accounts from those who experienced the disaster. Their stories are crucial for passing down the lessons of the earthquake and raising disaster awareness. From Sendai:
Take the Sanriku Coastal Highway to the Otani Coast IC, then head north on National Route 45. Turn right at the Iwaizaki entrance sign and drive for about 2 minutes.
*You cannot get on or off at the Iwaizaki IC from the Sendai direction.
From Iwate:
Head south on National Route 45 and turn left at the Iwaizaki entrance sign. Drive for about 2 minutes.
By Public Transportation (BRT, etc.):
From Sendai:
If using a highway bus, take the Kesennuma-bound bus from platform 40 at the Miyako Bus Sendai Highway Bus Center and get off at the Kagae Civic Center stop. It's about a 25-minute walk from there.
If using a taxi, walk straight for 3 minutes to JR Rikuzen-Kagae Station. The taxi ride will take about 3 minutes.
From Ichinoseki:
If using a highway bus, take the Kesennuma City Office-bound or Ofunato-bound bus from platform 5 at the Iwate Kotsu Ichinoseki Station and get off at Kesennuma Station.
If using the JR, take the Kesennuma-bound train from platform 3 of Ichinoseki Station on the Ofunato Line and get off at Kesennuma Station.
From Kesennuma Station, take the BRT to JR Rikuzen-Kagae Station (approx. 3 min by taxi, 20 min walk) regardless of whether you arrive by highway bus or JR. Show route
