A symbol of reconstruction that conveys the lessons of the Great East Japan Earthquake. A park where you can feel both commemoration and hope for the future.
Takata Matsubara Tsunami Reconstruction Memorial Park is located in Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture. It was built on the site of Takata Matsubara, which suffered devastating damage from the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. Many lives were lost. The park was developed through a collaborative effort by the national government, Iwate Prefecture, and Rikuzentakata City to commemorate and console the victims, and to pass on the memory and lessons of the disaster to future generations. The park preserves disaster remnants such as the Miracle Pine Tree, the old Takata Matsubara Roadside Station (Topic 45), boarding houses for relocation assistance, and Kesennuma Junior High School. These remnants serve as valuable historical sites where visitors can witness firsthand the devastation of that time. The park also features a beautiful landscape of lush greenery, a water basin, and a large roof, symbolizing reconstruction and a hopeful future. The water basin evokes the memory of the tsunami, yet the light shining on it represents a future of recovery, creating a space for visitors to find peace, commemorate the victims, and offer condolences. Takata Matsubara Tsunami Reconstruction Memorial Park is a place where many people come to learn from the lessons of the disaster and feel hope for the future. To ensure the memory of the earthquake is not forgotten and to pass on its lessons to future generations, please come and visit.
