Experience the breathtaking beauty of Hokkaido's natural landscape, where the stunning contrast between the translucent blue sea, known as Shakotan Blue, and the dramatic cliffs will leave you speechless.
Kamui Cape is a cape located on the Shakotan Peninsula in Hokkaido, offering a truly spectacular display of Hokkaido's natural beauty, with its contrast between the translucent blue sea, known as Shakotan Blue, and the dramatic cliffs. The name Kamui Cape comes from the Ainu word "kamui," meaning "god." It was also historically called Okamui Cape. From the parking lot, a well-maintained walking path called "Charenka no Michi" leads to the tip of the cape. This roughly 770-meter path takes about 20 to 30 minutes on foot. Along the path, you'll enjoy not only the Shakotan Blue sea but also views of Kamuiiwa, a 41-meter-high rock, the Ishikari Bay, and the Ishikari mountain range. Kamui Cape is also known for the legend of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and the Ainu girl, Charenka. Legend says that after escaping from Osushu's Korikawa, Yoshitsune fled to Ezo (Hokkaido), falling in love with Charenka, the daughter of an Ainu chieftain in the Hidaka region. However, he abandoned her and traveled further north, eventually crossing to the mainland. Charenka, longing for Yoshitsune, followed him to this cape, where upon learning the truth, she despaired and threw herself into the sea. It is said that Kamuiiwa is the embodiment of her vengeful spirit. Kamui Cape is a highly recommended sightseeing spot where you can experience the grandeur of nature and the weight of history. Come visit Kamui Cape and immerse yourself in the beautiful Shakotan Blue sea and the majestic natural landscape. While enjoying the view from Charenka no Michi, ponder the legend of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Charenka.
