Lake Saroma: Japan's largest brackish lake, offering breathtaking scenery and abundant nature.
Lake Saroma is Japan's largest brackish lake, situated along the Okhotsk Sea coast of Hokkaido. Stretching east to west, its shoreline extends for 26km. A sandbar connects the lake to the Okhotsk Sea on the south side, known as the "Ryugu Kaido" (Dragon Palace Street). Lake Saroma was formed approximately 1000 years ago when an inlet of the Okhotsk Sea was separated from the ocean by this sandbar. Lake Saroma is a stunning lake boasting magnificent nature and a rich ecosystem. Along its shores lies a wildflower garden teeming with precious plants and animals, offering breathtaking seasonal views. Spring brings blooming Ezo engosaku and katakuri flowers, summer showcases hamanas and Ezo sukashiyuri, autumn paints the surrounding mountains in vibrant hues, and winter allows for wakasagi ice fishing. The sunset over Lake Saroma is particularly captivating, enchanting visitors with its magical interplay of crimson skies and the lake's surface. The Lake Saroma Observatory, located atop Horoiwa Mountain near the lake's center, provides panoramic views. From the observatory, you can see the sandbar separating the lake and the sea, the Okhotsk Sea in the distance, and, on a clear day, even the Shiretoko mountain range. Lake Saroma has recently gained attention as a nature-rich tourist destination. With roadside stations and onsen (hot spring) facilities along its shores, it's also an ideal base for exploring the area. Experience the magnificent nature and rich ecosystem of Lake Saroma for yourself.
