Overview

Umekiya is a villa built in the Edo period by Naosuke Ii, the lord of Hikone, located right next to Hikone Castle. It's said that Naosuke dedicated himself to politics and scholarship here. Now designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, it's open to the public. Umekiya was where Naosuke spent the last 10 years of his life, known for his dedication to politics and learning. It's said that he planned important policies such as the Ansei Purge here. The shoin (study) and garden also showcase Naosuke's interest in arts like tea ceremony and calligraphy. The shoin was built for Naosuke to enjoy the tea ceremony, and its tokonoma (alcove) and design evoke the culture of that era. The garden features beautiful ponds and rock formations, offering seasonal views. Umekiya allows you to experience the history of Hikone Castle while gaining a deeper understanding of the figure Naosuke Ii. Be sure to visit it alongside Hikone Castle.
