A paradise of nature where approximately 200 species of flowers bloom, coloring the short summer of the Okhotsk Sea.
Koshima Shitsugen-en is a vast marshland garden spreading across an approximately 8km expanse of sand dunes along the Okhotsk Sea coast in eastern Hokkaido. The harsh cold of the Okhotsk Sea and the influence of Lake Toufutsu have fostered a unique ecosystem where a wide variety of plants flourish. From late April to September, approximately 200 species of flowers bloom, creating a breathtaking spectacle. From mid-June to late July, the garden is especially stunning, with vibrant displays of Ezo Daylily (Ezo Kisuge), Ezo Lily (Ezo Sukashiyuri), and Japanese Rose (Hamanasu), among many others. You can also spot rare flowers such as Iris sanguinea and Ezo-Oyamaryndou. Well-maintained walking paths allow for leisurely viewing. The JR Senmo Line runs through the garden, and a summer-only Shitsugen-en Station is also located there; capturing a photo of the train and the flower fields is a memorable experience. Furthermore, you can descend to Japan's northernmost singing sand beach and take a stroll along the shore. The sound of the waves and the gentle rustling of the sand creates a relaxing atmosphere that will make you forget time. Koshima Shitsugen-en is a hidden gem of Hokkaido, a harmonious blend of magnificent nature and delicate flowers. Come and see it for yourself!
