Lake Kutcharo

Overview

Lake Kutcharo is a brackish lake located in Hamatonbetsu-cho, Esashi District, in northern Hokkaido. Situated near the Okhotsk Sea, it boasts a unique environment where seawater and freshwater mix, resulting in a rich natural landscape. The lake's circumference is approximately 30km, encompassing two interconnected lakes—the large and small lakes—linked by a narrow channel. From spring to autumn, numerous migratory birds visit, enlivening the lake's surface. In spring and autumn, thousands of whooper swans cover the lake's surface, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Campgrounds and onsen (hot spring) facilities are available lakeside, offering a relaxing escape in nature.
