The remains of a residence connected to Todo Takatora, a master castle builder!
The Nabari Todoke Residence Ruins are a historical site located in Nabari City, Mie Prefecture. Its origins lie in a building constructed when Todo Takayoshi, the adopted son of the renowned castle builder Todo Takatora, was transferred to Nabari. Takayoshi succeeded Takatora and served as the lord of the Nabari domain. However, the residence was completely destroyed in the Great Nabari Fire of 1710. Although it was subsequently rebuilt, repeated fires and renovations over time mean that only a fraction of the original structure remains today. Nevertheless, the surviving main hall, martial arts training ground, Noh stage, and other features still convey a sense of the magnificent scale of the former daimyo (feudal lord) residence. The garden design and the tokonoma (alcove) also retain a sense of the period's atmosphere. The remarkably preserved traditional toilets (kawaya) and bath are also noteworthy. The Nabari Todoke Residence Ruins are a recommended spot not only for history buffs, but also for architecture and garden enthusiasts. Be sure to visit and experience the atmosphere of a former daimyo residence.
