Be mesmerized by the breathtaking beauty of the rice terraces, spreading out in a geometric pattern at the foot of the Hira mountains!
Hatano Tanada rice terraces are a breathtaking sight in Hata district, Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture, renowned as one of Japan's Top 100 Rice Terraces. Located on the northern foothills of the Hira mountain range, which stretches along the west coast of Lake Biwa, these terraces spread out in a bowl shape on a mountainside at an elevation of 400 meters. Geometrically arranged to follow the natural slope of the valley, these approximately 359 terraced plots cover about 13 hectares. All residents of the Hata district are members of the "Hatano Tanada Preservation Society", dedicated to maintaining and preserving this stunning landscape. The terraces' beautiful seasonal scenery has earned them recognition as the only location in Shiga Prefecture to be selected for the prestigious "Japan's Top 100 Rice Terraces" list in 2000. In spring, the vibrant new green foliage is reflected in the water of the rice paddies; summer brings lush greenery bathed in sunlight; autumn showcases golden rice stalks ready for harvest; and in winter, a serene blanket of snow transforms the landscape. This harmonious blend of magnificent nature and the lives of the people who inhabit this area, even serving as a filming location for the movie "Otokotachi no Yamato (Men of the Yamato)", has a calming effect on visitors. Hatano Tanada offers a glimpse into a quintessential Japanese landscape. Come and experience the beauty of the rice terraces and the way of life that thrives among them.
