A historic church built in the Meiji era, designated as a historical site of Okayama Prefecture.
Takahashi Christian Church, built in 1889 (Meiji 22), is the oldest existing church in Okayama Prefecture and is designated as a prefectural historical site. Designed and built by Western architect Ihei Yoshida, the church boasts a beautiful Western-style building. The interior is filled with a calm and sacred atmosphere, allowing visitors to relax and soak in the historical ambiance. The church is also known for being visited by Joseph Neesima (Shinshima Jo). Famous for his contributions to Japan's modernization in the Meiji era, Neesima is said to have conducted Christian missionary work during his visit to Takahashi. Takahashi Christian Church is therefore a significant location for tracing Neesima's footsteps. Takahashi City is home to many historical buildings and cultural heritage sites.
