Boasting one of the largest rice terrace areas in Kyushu, Uchinari Rice Terraces offer breathtakingly beautiful scenery, like a painting come to life.
Uchinari Rice Terraces are a vast landscape composed of approximately 1000 rice paddies located in Beppu City. Renowned as one of the largest in Kyushu, its stunning beauty captivates all who visit. The history of Uchinari Rice Terraces is long and rich; rice cultivation thrived here during the Edo period. However, during the Showa period, issues such as the aging farming population and a lack of successors led to the abandonment of some terraces. Despite this, driven by a desire to preserve this precious landscape, local residents established the "Uchinari Rice Terraces Association" in 1999, initiating preservation activities. The association undertakes various activities, including weeding, cleaning irrigation channels, and a rice paddy ownership program. As a result, Uchinari Rice Terraces have regained their beauty and become a beloved tourist spot. Several viewpoints offer spectacular views. The view from "Tsuki-mi-ishi" (Moon Viewing Stone), which offers a panoramic vista of the terraces, is particularly stunning and attracts many visitors. "Taromaru," offering a high-altitude perspective of the terraced landscape, and "Shimobata," offering a unique view from below, each possess their own distinct charm. Uchinari Rice Terraces is a place where you can experience not only breathtaking scenery but also the local culture and history. Be sure to visit!
