Hon Yakushiji Temple was a prominent temple in the Nara period, founded by Emperor Tenmu to pray for the recovery of his Empress (who later became Empress Jitō). Its grand complex boasted a massive foundation comparable in size to Todai-ji's Great Buddha Hall, featuring a Golden Hall, pagoda, and cloisters. Though it later burned down, remnants such as foundation stones and pagoda base stones remain, offering a glimpse into the temple's scale. Hon Yakushiji Temple Ruins are fascinating for history buffs and ancient history enthusiasts alike. The surrounding area includes the Kashihara City Museum of History and Unebiyama Kofun (tumulus), making it ideal for a full day of historical exploration.
