Kayama Iseki is a Jomon period archaeological site in Kitakami City, Iwate Prefecture, designated as a National Historic Site. In 1951, the discovery of stone arrangements featuring standing stones (stone circles) brought the site to prominence. Kayama Iseki contains approximately 30 stone arrangements, including some without standing stones, and is believed to be the remains of a Jomon period settlement. These stone arrangements are thought to have been tombs or ritual sites, though details remain unclear. Pit dwellings have also been excavated, offering a glimpse into the daily lives of the people of the time. A pit dwelling has been reconstructed, and the site is now a well-maintained historical park, complete with an exhibition hall and rest areas for visitors to relax and enjoy their visit.
