The breathtaking sight of this castle built into a rugged cliff is simply awe-inspiring! Iwabitsu Castle Ruins, known as the 'Castle in the Sky,' is a must-see for history buffs.
Iwabitsu Castle Ruins are located in Higashiagatsuma-machi, Agatsuma-gun, Gunma Prefecture. This mountain castle is perched on the eastern mid-slope of Iwabitsuyama Mountain, at an elevation of 802 meters. Its dramatic location, built into a sheer cliff face, truly earns it the title of 'Castle in the Sky'. Conquered by Sanada Masayuki, it's considered one of the three famous Sanada castles of Joshu (Upper Musashi Province). Iwabitsu Castle's history stretches back to the late Muromachi period, when it's said to have been built by the Azuma clan. During the Sengoku period (Warring States period), it was controlled by the Saito clan before being conquered by Sanada Masayuki in 1582. Sanada Masayuki used Iwabitsu Castle as a base to navigate the turbulent world of the Sengoku period in northern Kanto. The ruins showcase ingenious defensive structures that expertly utilize the challenging terrain. The stone walls encircling the castle, the "tatebori" (vertical ditches), and the "horikiri" (cut ditches) offer invaluable glimpses into the warfare of that era. Today, Iwabitsu Castle Ruins are designated as a historical site of Gunma Prefecture. A well-maintained hiking trail makes the site easily accessible to all. It takes about 15 minutes to reach the castle ruins. Along the way, you can examine the stone walls built along the steep cliffs and defensive structures such as the "tatebori". From the summit, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views – a truly invigorating experience! It's a highly recommended sightseeing spot where you can enjoy both the romance of history and the grandeur of nature. When visiting Iwabitsu Castle Ruins, remember to wear comfortable shoes and bring water and a hat. In summer, be prepared for the heat, and in winter, dress warmly for cold weather. Above all, prioritize safety and enjoy your visit!
