Sasanabe, which flourished as a post town along the Hagi Oukan, was designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 2011. Explore its townscape, which retains the atmosphere of the Edo period.
The Hagi City Sasanabe Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings is located in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Approximately 20.8 hectares in the Sasanabe area of Hagi City (formerly Asahi Village, Abu District) showcases a townscape reminiscent of the Edo period. Sasanabe was situated midway along the Hagi Oukan, connecting Hagi Castle town and Mitajiri in Hofuku City. It prospered as a post town centered around a teahouse where feudal lords rested during their travels, such as during the Sankin Kotai (alternate attendance) system. The original land division, established from the teahouse, remains largely unchanged to this day. Thatched-roof and red-brown tile-roofed main houses intermingle along the Oukan, creating a townscape that blends seamlessly with the surrounding rice paddies. Beyond the historical buildings, the surrounding natural beauty provides a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere. Take a stroll, imagine the bustling activity of the past, and soak in the history and tranquility.
