Overview

Shionomisaki Lighthouse stands proudly on the Shionomisaki cape, jutting into the Pacific Ocean in Kushimoto, Wakayama Prefecture. Boasting a history spanning over 150 years, it was initially completed in 1870 (Meiji 3) as Japan's first wooden Western-style lighthouse. It was rebuilt in its current stone structure in 1878 (Meiji 11). Chosen by popular vote, it's a highly popular lighthouse, ranked among the "Top 50 Lighthouses of Japan" since November 1, 1998 (Heisei 10). The lighthouse houses a museum where you can learn about its history and role. The observation deck at the top offers panoramic views of the vast Pacific Ocean, extending all the way to the horizon.
