A historic dam protecting Hakodate City's water source. See the unique buttress dam design!
Sasagawa Dam plays a vital role as the water source for Hakodate City, completed in 1923 (Taisho 12). This dam boasts a unique and rare structure: it's Japan's first buttress dam, featuring a distinctive design with concrete crisscrossing in a grid pattern. Sasagawa Reservoir, the dam's lake, was selected as one of the “Top 100 Dam Lakes of Japan” in 2005 (Heisei 17), showcasing its beautiful scenery and abundant natural beauty. A well-maintained walking path circles the lake, perfect for a leisurely stroll. Cherry blossoms abound in spring, and vibrant autumn foliage makes for stunning views year-round. The Sasagawa Dam Museum is located nearby, offering insights into the dam's history and structure. Canoeing and fishing are also popular activities on the lake. Sasagawa Dam offers a wonderful blend of history and nature—a must-see destination!
