The Former Nate-juku Honjin, located in Nate-ichiba, Kinokawa City, Wakayama Prefecture, is a historic honjin where Kishu domain lords stayed during their participation in the sankin-kotai system (alternate attendance system) and falconry hunts. The current buildings were reconstructed during the Kyoho and Horeki periods (18th century), and the main house, reception rooms, rice storehouse, and south storehouse are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
The main house retains the layout of the time, including the entrance hall, raised platform, shop area, reception room, kitchen, and the lord's quarters, offering a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the era. The upper room in the lord's quarters, where the domain lords stayed, is particularly impressive with its splendor.
Also on the premises is the former home of Kae, the wife of Huaoka Seishu, making it a great place to deepen your understanding of the culture and history of the period when visited in conjunction with Huaoka Seishu's birthplace and memorial hall.
The Former Nate-juku Honjin is a tranquil and serene space where you can leisurely stroll and experience history. The surrounding area boasts stunning natural landscapes, including mountains and the Kino River, offering beautiful scenery throughout the year.
