Lafcadio Hearn's Former Kumamoto Residence is a relocated and reconstructed building, the first home in Kumamoto of the Meiji-era literary giant, Lafcadio Hearn. Hearn arrived in Kumamoto in 1891 (Meiji 24) and created many works here, including "Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan." His life in Kumamoto fostered a deep interest in Japanese culture and customs, which he then introduced to the world through his writing. The former residence features exhibits showcasing his living quarters and daily life. You can also immerse yourself in Hearn's literary world while admiring the Japanese garden he cherished. Born in Greece and an American citizen, Hearn naturalized in Japan, deeply loved its culture, and left behind a wealth of literary works. His writings are still beloved by many today. A visit to this residence offers a deeper understanding of his life and works.
