Overview

Minami-rakuen is a Japanese garden built in the late Edo period as a villa for the Date clan lord of Uwajima. The lord cherished this land and transformed approximately 100,000 tsubo (approximately 330,000 square meters) into a magnificent garden. The sheer scale of Minami-rakuen is truly remarkable. Designed as a pond-and-island garden (chiisen kaiyūshiki teien), it features numerous ponds, waterfalls, and meticulously placed hills, creating a harmonious and breathtaking landscape that's like a painting come to life. Another captivating aspect of Minami-rakuen is its seasonal floral displays. From cherry blossoms and azaleas in spring, lotus flowers in summer, vibrant autumn foliage, and camellias in winter, there's always something new to admire. The autumn foliage, in particular, is spectacular, transforming the garden into a fiery canvas of reds and yellows. Designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty and an Important Cultural Property of Japan, Minami-rakuen represents the pinnacle of traditional Japanese garden design. Take your time strolling through and immerse yourself in the beauty of Japan.
