Mie Prefecture's only prefectural art museum. Enjoy a world of art through its rich collection and engaging special exhibitions.
Overview
The Mie Prefectural Art Museum, opened in 1982, was the first full-scale art museum in the Chubu and Tokai regions. The museum houses numerous works by artists with ties to Mie Prefecture, including impressive fusuma (sliding door) paintings by Soga Shohaku. Its collection of Western art, particularly from Spain, is also extensive and captivating. The museum boasts a particularly strong collection of Japanese modern Western paintings from the Meiji period to the present, offering invaluable insight into the history of Japanese art. In addition to its permanent exhibitions, the museum frequently hosts special exhibitions showcasing a wide range of artistic styles, from contemporary to traditional art, ensuring there's always something new to discover. Recent exhibitions have also incorporated an international perspective, solidifying the museum's role as a vibrant hub for cultural exchange. The Mie Prefectural Art Museum is deeply rooted in its community and beloved by people of all ages. A visit provides a wonderful opportunity to engage with art and enhance your appreciation for aesthetics. The museum is also conveniently located near other cultural facilities, such as the Mie Prefecture Comprehensive Cultural Center and the Mie Prefecture General Museum, making it a perfect destination for a fulfilling day.
